Voices of the Rainforest
The English Association Review of Voices of the Rainforest: 'The rainforests are among the most important of the earth’s habitats and it is not surprising that there are many children’s books with this theme. This one, on the Amazon rainforests, stands out because it has a friendly but unpatronizing text and vibrant illustrations that impart valuable information. It also appeals because the daily life and customs are communicated through the ‘voices’ of the rainforest people. Three kinds of print are used: large print for the introduction of each topic, bold print in speech balloons and italic print to provide more detailed information. Illustrations, both large and small, communicate the noise and colour of the rainforest – so we have pictures of the green and brown snakes, the red and black poison-dart frogs, the blue humming birds and the scarlet hue of the flycatching rafflessia (which is the largest flower in the world). The large illustrations showing, for example, the giant tree whose leaves form a roof over the canopy, give a sense of the hugeness of the rainforest. Manning and Granström are known for their wonderfully detailed and well researched small pictures and annotations – these work brilliantly here. This book will be an excellent classroom resource, not least for science and geography lessons.
