Joe Harland
The big day

A blog about doing the marathon, not, like, a really really long blog.

well, that hurt - 19/04/2008

I wanted to get round in under 5 hours. I did it in 4.57. Not the fastest performance in the world, but when you spend the first 30 years of your life dodging sport of any kind, then you’re always playing catch-up.

Shoes were a bit tight. The weather was grim. Light drizzle is one thing. Torrential downpour quite another. Certain irony what with running it for the rainforest obviously, but the three main downpours (particularly those at 10 and 20 miles were ludicrous).

Support made a massive difference - so massive thanks to Nicola and Noah, the Slades, Sam and Vickey online, Nicky Birch, Sam Potts, and all those sponsors behind the scene who made the day possible.

Not sure I’ll do another full marathon for a while now. Maybe wait until the lad in the picture can run it with me. I’ll put my first application for 2021 in soon.
