OCDH Appeal

Date: 17/10/2008

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a programme of the international Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), has recently been informed that our partner organization in the Republic of Congo, the Congolese Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) has been victim to threats, slander, and denigration by the national police. Threatening to take action and even arrest members of OCDH, the commander of the national police released a letter to the paper La Semaine Africaine asserting that the organization is inciting civil disturbance and working under false pretences. This letter was written after OCDH had criticised the organisation of local and municipal elections earlier this year and circulated a press release demanding an that an independent electoral commission be established.

The Rainforest Foundation UK agrees with this concern and is deeply worried by the threats being issued against OCDH and its staff. We are calling on our supporters to write a letter to Congolese authorities and have prepared letter templates in English and French so that responding to this Call to Action is easy to do.

RFUK Response to the Eliasch Review
Date: 14/10/2008

A new report published today by Gordon Brown's Special Representative on Deforestation and Clean Energy, Johan Eliasch, recommends that rich countries should pay developing countries not to cut down their rainforests, as a cheap alternative to reducing industrial emissions here at home.  The Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) welcomes the report's call for urgent measures to prevent destruction of the world's forests in order to counter climate change, but finds its conclusion that countries can somehow trade off pollution reduction for forest protection flawed.

A rise in logging is putting pressure on the Gabonese forests and their people
Date: 11/08/2008

On the face of it, Gabon is a relatively wealthy country. Substantial oil reserves and a population of only 1.4 million have combined to give it one of the highest GDPs in sub-Saharan Africa at $5280 per capita. But you do not need to travel far out of the capital Libreville to realise that the statistics are misleading.
