Welcome to the second edition of the Rainforest Foundation UK's (RFUK) Programmes Newsletter. In this edition, we focus on our recently launched work to support i ndigenous Asháninka communities in Peru to uphold their rights in the face of the proposed construction of huge hydroelectric dams on their territory. The threat to forest communities in general, and indigenous communities in particular, from large hydroelectric dams is becoming ever more present as part of the search for alternative forms of energy. In this edition, we explore some of the challenges in terms of environmental sustainability and human rights, that the construction of dams poses, focussing on the particular case of the Asháninka of the Ene River Valley in Peru, which RFUK have been supporting for many years, as well as providing some highlights from our other work over the last 3 months.
