Settlers

Governments, and mining and logging companies build roads into the rainforest. You may think that a road does not take up much space, but when people move into the area, they build new towns, villages and more roads. Often they set up their farms in the rainforest. These activities DO take up a lot of space, and a lot of rainforest can be lost.

 

Once a road has been built, it makes it a lot easier for the loggers, miners and ranchers to take their wood and farm produce to places where it can be exported, speeding up the rate of deforestation .
