What makes us different from other organisations?
Our approach differs from that of other organisations in that we are committed to both human rights and environmental protection.
Early attempts at environmental conservation often excluded local populations and sometimes resulted in forced expulsion from their traditional lands. The Rainforest Foundation believes that conservation must respect and strengthen local peoples rights.
Indigenous peoples’ participation and their knowledge of the local ecology is also now recognised as one of the most effective environmental management tools.
The Rainforest Foundation was one of the earliest organisations to realise this, and to advocate the involvement of forest communities in the protection of the rainforests.
The Foundation is also unusual in that, as well as supporting practical projects in tropical rainforest areas, it also carries out international advocacy campaigns. We believe that the combination of practical work and lobbying, all of which is based on local experience, is the most powerful tool for lasting change.
