Kinshasa, 28 de octubre de 2021<\/strong>\u00a0- Destacados cient\u00edficos africanos e internacionales se unen hoy al creciente llamamiento para que el gobierno de la Rep\u00fablica Democr\u00e1tica del Congo (RDC) cancele sus planes de levantar una prohibici\u00f3n de 20 a\u00f1os sobre nuevas concesiones de tala industrial. M\u00e1s de 25 cient\u00edficos enviaron un\u00a0carta<\/a>\u00a0a los donantes internacionales advirtiendo de las repercusiones sociales y medioambientales de un inminente levantamiento de la moratoria.<\/p>\r\n

Los ecologistas temen que un acuerdo forestal de $1bn con la RDC que se anunciar\u00e1 en la COP26 sea\u00a0probablemente d\u00e9 luz verde a una nueva tala masiva<\/a>\u00a0de la segunda selva tropical m\u00e1s grande del mundo.<\/p>\r\n

\"Vigilar los bosques intactos es crucial para la recuperaci\u00f3n de un\u00a0un planeta cada vez m\u00e1s caliente<\/a>. Es importante que no demos por sentados nuestros bosques y su existencia futura\", afirma\u00a0Corneille Ewango Ekokinya<\/a>profesor de la Universidad de Kisangani. \"Ser\u00eda bueno que el gobierno prorrogara la moratoria sobre nuevas talas industriales y encontrara otras formas de desarrollar la econom\u00eda m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la tala de la selva tropical\", a\u00f1adi\u00f3.<\/p>\r\n

Los planes para levantar la prohibici\u00f3n fueron anunciados por la ministra de Medio Ambiente de la RDC, Eve Bazaiba.\u00a0adoptado<\/a>\u00a0por el Consejo de Ministros el 9 de julio, en medio de\u00a0conversaciones sobre protecci\u00f3n forestal<\/a>\u00a0con donantes internacionales como Noruega, Reino Unido, Alemania y Francia.<\/p>\r\n

Los cient\u00edficos advierten de \"catastr\u00f3ficas repercusiones ambientales, sociales y clim\u00e1ticas\", que podr\u00edan \"dar lugar a que decenas de millones de hect\u00e1reas de selva tropical actualmente pr\u00edstina queden abiertas a la explotaci\u00f3n industrial.\" Sostienen que la tala comercial - \"aunque s\u00f3lo sea para especies maderables seleccionadas\"-\u00a0a menudo conduce<\/a>\u00a0hasta la p\u00e9rdida total de los bosques.<\/p>\r\n

La cuenca del Congo podr\u00eda ser la \u00faltima de las grandes selvas tropicales que sigue actuando como sumidero de carbono tras los recientes estudios que indican que el Amazonas se ha convertido en un\u00a0emisor neto de carbono<\/a>. La expansi\u00f3n de la tala en la RDC tambi\u00e9n podr\u00eda amenazar la Cuvette Centrale\u00a0turberas<\/a>un ecosistema que almacena 30 600 millones de toneladas de carbono y corre el riesgo de llevar a las especies a la extinci\u00f3n.<\/p>\r\n

La industria maderera ha perjudicado a menudo a las comunidades dependientes de los bosques. Sin embargo, es \"ampliamente\u00a0reconocido<\/a>\u00a0que los bosques bajo el control de los pueblos ind\u00edgenas y otras comunidades locales\" -ahora legalmente posible en la RDC- ofrezcan \"resultados medioambientales, sociales y econ\u00f3micos positivos\".<\/p>\r\n

Los cient\u00edficos advierten al gobierno de la RDC y a sus socios internacionales de que cualquier expansi\u00f3n de la tala industrial en el pa\u00eds ser\u00eda incompatible con sus programas de protecci\u00f3n forestal. En su lugar, el apoyo deber\u00eda dirigirse a medidas alternativas como la silvicultura comunitaria y un control m\u00e1s estricto de las empresas madereras.<\/p>\r\n

La carta de los cient\u00edficos se ha enviado a los donantes junto con un\u00a0petici\u00f3n firmada por casi 100.000 personas<\/a>\u00a0en la RDC y en todo el mundo, con el apoyo de\u00a0Greenpeace \u00c1frica<\/a>,\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Rainforest del Reino Unido<\/a>\u00a0y\u00a0Rescate de la selva tropical<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n
