The future of the Congo rainforest lies in the hands of its people 🌿The Democratic Republic of Congo holds 60% of the world’s second-largest rainforest, constituting a vital carbon sink for the planet. As world leaders prepare for COP30, a new briefing from RFUK and Congolese and Indigenous organisations, shows that community forestry offers one of the most effective and fair solutions to protect these forests. In this post, we reflect on RFUK's journey with community forestry and note it's importance in climate action moving forward. Across the DRC, more than 227 communities now manage nearly 4.5 million hectares of forest. The Ama Ene women’s group grew to 20 members strong and 2 new additions to the Board of Directors.🌿💪Next stop, cocoa! 🍫From unloading 80kg sacks, (4 tonnes in total!), to visiting the processing plant, we witnessed how the @kemito.ene cooperative is transforming cocoa into opportunity, all while staying rooted in sustainable agroforestry. 🌱👉 Women’s leadership + sustainable economies = stronger communities & healthier forests.Slide 5 - Yanet Velasco Castillo, a member of CARE’s Board, an important authority and a leader in cultural changes regarding gender in the Ashaninka community. ♀️

🌿 Hope in the heart of North Kivu.This story is the last of a five-part Forests for the Future impact series on how community forests in the DRC are enabling communities to drive their own development and protect climate critical forests.In conflict-affected North Kivu, two remote communities are showing how forests can fuel peace and opportunity. With support from RFUK's Forests For The Future project, in partnership with PREPPYG and @reseaucref, Batikambema and Asimia communities now have official plans to sustainably manage over 5,700 hectares of forest, which will enable them to generate over $130,000 in income through farming, honey, pigs and more.Not only this, but women are finally at the decision-making table: “Before, we weren’t even included in basic discussions about our natural resources."
