In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestfoundationuk.org\/our-projects\/where-we-work\/central-african-republic\/\">Central African Republic<\/a>, for example, virtually the entire rainforest area is allocated to industrial logging concessions and strictly protected areas, denying forest peoples any control over their traditional lands. However, over time this model has generated little developmental or environmental benefit.<\/p>\n<p>There is now a growing consensus that strengthening forest communities&#8217; rights is a more effective means of both protecting rainforests and fighting poverty.\u00a0Across the region, legal reforms are now opening up this possibility, notably in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestfoundationuk.org\/our-projects\/where-we-work\/drc\/\">Democratic Republic of Congo<\/a> where a groundbreaking community forest law enables communities to secure and manage their traditional lands in perpetuity.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tWhat we&#8217;re doing\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<ul>\n<li>To ensure the sustainability of national community forestry processes, we push for the ongoing improvement of related laws and policies and promote multi-actor dialogue and integration with other forest, land and climate reforms. We also strengthen the capacity of forest administrations and local civil society to fulfil their important role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>On the ground, we support dozens of local communities to understand and navigate their countries&#8217; forestry laws, submit applications and develop simple management plans and sustainable livelihoods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In DRC, more than 150 community forests covering <a href=\"hhttps:\/\/rdc.geocfcl.org\/applications\/\">three million hectares<\/a> have already been established, with potentially tens of millions more available to local communities. In CAR, where there is a lack of available land, we support piloting of co-management approaches between community forests and overlapping logging concessions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cf-resources.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tExplore the community forest resource library\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestfoundationuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/3c7313cd-64da-45bb-a236-5147ed52179a.jpg\" alt=\"3c7313cd-64da-45bb-a236-5147ed52179a\" itemprop=\"image\" title=\"3c7313cd-64da-45bb-a236-5147ed52179a\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n<h2>\n\t\tOur impacts\n\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestfoundationuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/engagement-icon.png\" alt=\"engagement-icon\" itemprop=\"image\" title=\"engagement-icon\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n<h4>\n\t\tOver 120,000 hectares secured for forest communities\n\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>We have supported among the first community forests in DRC, securing the rights of more than 28,000 people.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestfoundationuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/community-mappers-icon.png\" alt=\"community-mappers-icon\" itemprop=\"image\" title=\"community-mappers-icon\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n<h4>\n\t\tA national community forest database for DRC\n\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>A unique database containing official information about every concession and application in the country.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestfoundationuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/mapping-icon.png\" alt=\"mapping-icon\" itemprop=\"image\" title=\"mapping-icon\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n<h4>\n\t\tMajor policy advances for people and forests\n\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>One of the most progressive community forest laws in Africa and a national strategy to guide its implementation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading='false' src=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestfoundationuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dembele-alexi-village-mibenga.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<p>&#8220;For a long time, we&#8217;ve seen loggers come here. It was not good. We only knew that the State had sold the forest, and the loggers kept coming&#8230; Then you [RFUK and local partner GASHE] came to support us in obtaining our community forest.
