Exciting news from the Ecuadorian Amazon! 🎉 RFUK

Exciting news from the Ecuadorian Amazon! 🎉RFUK has launched its first partnership in Ecuador with Corporación Chakra, an Indigenous-led organisation representing five Kichwa producer associations. Together, we're supporting communities to protect forests, strengthen sustainable livelihoods and monitor growing threats using ForestLink and ForestEye. 📱🌳 At the centre of this work is the chakra – a traditional Kichwa agroforestry system that grows food while conserving forests and biodiversity. Over the next few months, community monitors will map the production plots of 299 producers and bring data together into one platform, helping demonstrate that Chakra Seal products are produced without deforestation. The project will also help communities respond to increasing pressures from monoculture expansion and illegal mining, which threaten forests, rivers and Indigenous ways of life. This is just the beginning of an exciting new collaboration to strengthen Indigenous-led forest protection in Ecuador. With support from The Waterloo Foundation. New tools + stronger partnerships = better protection for forests. 🌍RFUK and our partners have launched a new phase of community-led forest monitoring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During a workshop in Kinshasa, partners were trained on the latest versions of ForestLink and ForestEye – two powerful tools that help communities monitor threats to their forests and defend their rights. What's new in ForestLink? - Easier to use mobile app - Improved platform design - New case management system - Better tracking of alerts and follow-up actions Together with satellite monitoring from ForestEye, communities can identify forest threats, verify what's happening on the ground and take action. Over the next three years, the programme will support Indigenous Peoples and local communities across the DRC and Gabon as they work to protect the Congo Basin rainforest. Because the people closest to the forest are often the best placed to protect it. A major win for the Congo Basin! 💚The DRC's Environment Minister has announced that the country's moratorium on new industrial logging concessions will not be lifted. This is an important victory for the coalition of 70 Congolese and international organisations, including RFUK, that just last week called on the government to keep this vital protection in place. The moratorium helps safeguard one of the world's largest tropical forests, protecting biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples' rights, local communities and our shared climate. But this is only the beginning. We are now calling on the DRC Government to turn this commitment into lasting law by strengthening forest governance, protecting community rights and ensuring the moratorium remains in place for the long term. ⚠️The future of the Congo Basin is at a crossroads.⚠️70 NGOs have written to the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, urging the government to maintain the country's logging moratorium. Our new briefing warns that draft legislation to lift the ban could open potentially tens of millions of hectares of rainforest to industrial logging, threatening one of the world’s most important carbon and biodiversity stores as well as the rights of thousands of local and Indigenous communities. The DRC is home to around 60% of the Congo Basin rainforest. Decisions taken today will have global consequences for climate, nature and people. Community Forest Success in North Kivu, Against All the Odds 🍃We've just published a new story celebrating a major milestone for community rights and conservation in the DRC. On 2 June 2026, the Masombea community in North Kivu secured legal recognition of its 14,404 hectare community forest – an area roughly equivalent to Paris and Manhattan combined. For the 400 people living across the villages of Msrii, Mampo'o and N'kompe, this achievement secures their rights to manage and protect their customary forest lands for future generations. Located alongside Maiko National Park, the new community forest will help strengthen community-led conservation in one of the most biodiverse regions of the Congo Basin, proving that protecting forests works best when local people are recognised as their custodians. This success is the result of years of determination, collaboration and partnership. Covering over 500,000 hectares, their data is leading to real justice.⚖️ The Result? In 2025, their evidence led to 5 government raids and the destruction of illegal mining machinery. Every legal complaint they filed was accepted for investigation.⚠️ The Risk? It’s getting dangerous. Criminal networks are arming up. Jemimah is one of many women finding justice through Haki Ardhi (“Land Justice”). 🌱⚖️Co-developed by @rainforestfoundationuk, @tmgthinktank, Shibuye Community Health Workers and @kenyalandalliance, this tool allows women to report land abuses anonymously via simple text messages. No internet needed. ⚖️Justice wins in PeruOn World Day of Social Justice, we share the good news that Peru’s Supreme Court has overturned a ruling that punished Indigenous organisation, and our partner @fenamad, for warning about threats to uncontacted peoples and their forests.The Court recognised that the lawsuit was an attempt to silence public-interest advocacy and affirmed that freedom of expression is essential for defending Indigenous rights and the environment.This landmark decision sets an important precedent against intimidation lawsuits targeting Indigenous and environmental defenders. But the fight isn’t over.
