Pamakiari, Ene River Basin, Peru – August 2025

The II Congress Ama Ene has brought together more than 150 Asháninka women from 19 communities along the Ene River, marking an important milestone in advancing Indigenous women’s leadership and gender rights in the region.

On 14 August, CARE boats travelled upriver, stopping at each community to collect participants for the gathering. The seven-hour journey to the host community of Pamakiari was filled with laughter, conversation in the Asháninka language and the sounds of babies on board - a vivid reminder of the intergenerational strength of these women.

Over three days, the women shared experiences, built collective strategies and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing gender equality in their communities. A key outcome was the expansion of Ama Ene, the specialised team of Asháninka women dedicated to ensuring the continuity, sustainability and accountability of the gender agenda. Five new members joined the team, bringing the total to 20.

Working voluntarily, the Ama Ene team receives training and support to build confidence, strengthen their voices and advocate effectively for their families and communities. Their efforts are backed by CARE and Angel Pedro Valerio, President of CARE, ensuring institutional support for women’s empowerment across the Ene River basin.

The Congress highlighted how Indigenous women’s leadership is vital not only for community well-being but also for the protection of cultural identity and collective rights. With Ama Ene now stronger than ever, Asháninka women are better equipped to drive forward a gender agenda rooted in solidarity, empowerment and resilience.
