In August, the National Community Forestry Week brought together communities, NGOs and government in Mbandaka, DRC, to celebrate how local people are driving forest protection and sustainable development through community forestry.

Our Forests for the Future pilot model showed that when communities lead, forests thrive and local economies grow. 🌱

As RFUK’s Georges Thierry Handja said:

“It’s about social and environmental justice, but now we are also making the economic case.”

This August, our Peru Coordinator travelled to Satipo, Peru to connect with our partners @careashaninka and @kemito.ene

Here, they joined 150 Asháninka women travelling for 7 hours upriver to reflect, exchange and demand action from authorities at the II Women’s Congress. The Ama Ene women’s group grew to 20 members strong and 2 new additions to the Board of Directors.🌿💪

Next stop, cocoa! 🍫From unloading 80kg sacks, (4 tonnes in total!), to visiting the processing plant, we witnessed how the @kemito.ene cooperative is transforming cocoa into opportunity, all while staying rooted in sustainable agroforestry. 🌱

👉 Women’s leadership + sustainable economies = stronger communities & healthier forests.

🌿 Hope in the heart of North Kivu.

This story is the last of a five-part Forests for the Future impact series on how community forests in the DRC are enabling communities to drive their own development and protect climate critical forests.

In conflict-affected North Kivu, two remote communities are showing how forests can fuel peace and opportunity.

With support from RFUK's Forests For The Future project, in partnership with PREPPYG and @reseaucref, Batikambema and Asimia communities now have official plans to sustainably manage over 5,700 hectares of forest, which will enable them to generate over $130,000 in income through farming, honey, pigs and more.

Not only this, but women are finally at the decision-making table: “Before, we weren’t even included in basic discussions about our natural resources." Ms Naomie Mwamini, Asimia community.

📣 Land rights breakthrough in the DRC!

For the first time ever, the DRC has passed a national land-use planning law, following a multi-stakeholder process that began in May 2017, with civil society partners, such as GeoFirst Development, CAGDFT and DGPA. This is huge for people and the planet.

The law:
✅ Recognises customary land rights
✅ Requires Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) for community lands
✅ Protects wetlands, peatlands, and forests
✅ Gives communities a say in how land is used

“This hopefully means no more haphazard spatial allocations and overlapping titles,” said Alphonse Wala Etina, Coordinator of GeoFirst Development

This is key step in making sure local voices lead the way. 🌍💪

RFUK, in collaboration with @earthinsightofficial,

RFUK, in collaboration with @earthinsightofficial, Our Land Without Oil and @coraprdc has released a new geospatial analysis exposing the scale and severity of fossil fuel expansion proposed under the DRC’s 2025 oil licensing round.

Key findings include:
● Oil blocks overlap with 8.3 million hectares (23%) of protected areas, 8.6 million hectares (23%) of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and 66.8 million hectares (64%) of intact tropical forests.
● 72% of the newly established Kivu–Kinshasa Green Corridor, a flagship conservation initiative announced in early 2025, is now overlapped by oil blocks, jeopardising its ecological integrity and undermining its credibility as a sustainable development and climate solution.
● The Cuvette Centrale, the world’s largest tropical peatland complex and a crucial carbon sink storing an estimated 30 gigatons of carbon, is at serious risk of degradation, with the majority of the DRC’s peatland area now included in newly designated oil blocks.
● An estimated 39 million people over approximately 37,000 cities, towns and villages live within the new oil blocks. This includes many Indigenous Peoples and forest-based communities who depend on intact forests, rivers and healthy ecosystems for their livelihoods, cultures and survival.

These findings raise serious questions about the compatibility of the DRC’s fossil fuel agenda with its stated climate, conservation and human rights commitments.

The report documents not only the ecological and climatic stakes, but also the direct risks to Indigenous peoples and local communities who depend on these landscapes for their survival.

This is a critical moment for the DRC and for global environmental governance. The decisions made today will shape the future of one of the planet’s most important carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots.

A new study by @apemrdc and RFUK has revealed systematic illegalities in the country’s industrial logging sector, from tax evasion and rights abuses to expired permits and shady conservation deals.

🌍 The DRC holds the largest share of the Congo Basin rainforest, the last remaining tropical forest carbon sink. But illegal logging is accelerating deforestation and hurting the communities who depend on the forest most.
