The UK government has confirmed drastic reductions to overseas forest aid. This threatens not just trees, but the millions of Indigenous and local communities who protect them. It also threatens our global climate stability.

And we refuse to sit in silence. 🌍✨

They aren’t just watching the forest. They are pro

They aren’t just watching the forest. They are protecting it. 🛡️🌿

In Peru’s Madre de Dios region, 156 Indigenous observers are standing on the frontline against illegal mining. Covering over 500,000 hectares, their data is leading to real justice.

⚖️ The Result? In 2025, their evidence led to 5 government raids and the destruction of illegal mining machinery. Every legal complaint they filed was accepted for investigation.

⚠️ The Risk? It’s getting dangerous. Criminal networks are arming up. In some communities, 70% of the land is already affected. 79 Indigenous leaders are currently on a protected list due to threats.

We are working with our partner @fenamad to ensure these defenders have the tech, legal backing, and safety tools they need to keep going. From threat maps to new risk-reporting apps, we’re evolving to meet the threat.

Indigenous communities are leading the fight for the Amazon. Will you stand with them?

Meet Jemimah Oronga 👆

When her husband married another woman, Jemimah faced what too many women in Kenya endure: the threat of being kicked off the land she calls home. Jemimah is one of many women finding justice through Haki Ardhi (“Land Justice”). 🌱⚖️

Co-developed by @rainforestfoundationuk, @tmgthinktank, Shibuye Community Health Workers and @kenyalandalliance, this tool allows women to report land abuses anonymously via simple text messages. No internet needed. Just a safe voice for justice.

✨ Women like Jemimah are receiving legal aid and psychosocial support.
✨ Cases are tracked digitally, ensuring nothing gets lost.
✨ Survivors are becoming advocates, empowering their whole communities.

⚖️Justice wins in Peru

On World Day of Social Justice, we share the good news that Peru’s Supreme Court has overturned a ruling that punished Indigenous organisation, and our partner @fenamad, for warning about threats to uncontacted peoples and their forests.

The Court recognised that the lawsuit was an attempt to silence public-interest advocacy and affirmed that freedom of expression is essential for defending Indigenous rights and the environment.

This landmark decision sets an important precedent against intimidation lawsuits targeting Indigenous and environmental defenders. But the fight isn’t over. Stronger laws are still needed to stop these cases before harm is done.

The future of the Congo rainforest lies in the hands of its people 🌿

The Democratic Republic of Congo holds 60% of the world’s second-largest rainforest, constituting a vital carbon sink for the planet. As world leaders prepare for COP30, a new briefing from RFUK and Congolese and Indigenous organisations, shows that community forestry offers one of the most effective and fair solutions to protect these forests. In this post, we reflect on RFUK's journey with community forestry and note it's importance in climate action moving forward.

Across the DRC, more than 227 communities now manage nearly 4.5 million hectares of forest. These locally led initiatives are transforming lives and landscapes, by combining forest protection with better livelihoods and stronger rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

In August, the National Community Forestry Week brought together communities, NGOs and government in Mbandaka, DRC, to celebrate how local people are driving forest protection and sustainable development through community forestry.

Our Forests for the Future pilot model showed that when communities lead, forests thrive and local economies grow. 🌱

As RFUK’s Georges Thierry Handja said:

“It’s about social and environmental justice, but now we are also making the economic case.”

We will be speaking more on the impact and history of community forestry at RFUK in the lead up to COP30, and how this movement is changing lives across the Congo Basin.
