ENGLAND CHALLENGED TO GAME BY BRAZILIAN RAINFOREST TRIBE
England’s world cup team have been challenged to a football game by one of Brazil’s largest and fiercest native Amazonian people, the Kayapó.
In a letter today to England Manager, Roy Hodgson, Chief Raoni Metuktire and Chief Megaron Txucarramae, have invited the squad to their rainforest territory “after playing Brazil in the final”.
“We are all huge football fans and we challenge England to play against the Kayapó ‘national team’,” wrote Chief Megaron.
“We live beside the Xingu River in the eastern part of the Amazonian rainforest. Our village is very traditional and we still live as our forefathers, so this would be a great opportunity for you to see how we live.”
The chiefs included a photograph of the some of the Kayapó ‘national team’with their letter.
The two chiefs will be visiting the UK from June 9th-11th to alert people in Britain to the continuing destruction of the Amazon rainforests. Their visit will include a meeting with HRH Prince Charles and members of parliament.
The Rainforest Foundation UK was founded 25 years ago in 1989 by Sting and Trudie Styler, after they saw first-hand the impact the destruction of the Amazon rainforests had on the Kayapó Indians’ way of life.
This sparked the Foundation’s first campaign which, in 1993, resulted in the protection of 27,359 km² of indigenous peoples’ land. The Foundation has worked in more than 20 countries to date towards its mission of “supporting indigenous peoples and traditional populations of the world's rainforest to protect their rainforest homes and fulfil their rights to land, life and livelihood”.
